Stating the Bleeding Obvious

You know that something in the world is not making sense when an established, well respected and leading science institution feels compelled to publish the following statement:

The Geological Society of London is the oldest national learned society for the Earth sciences in the world, and embodies the collective knowledge of nearly 10,000 Earth scientists worldwide. On their behalf it wishes, during the United Nations International Year of Planet Earth, to place on record the following facts as being long established beyond doubt.

  • Planet Earth, along with the other planets in the Solar System, was formed approximately 4560 million years ago.

  • Life has existed on Earth for thousands of millions of years. It has evolved into its current form by a combination of genetic variation and natural selection - and is likely to go on doing so for as long as it continues to exist.

  • Close study of the structure and organisation (sic - that's how the English spell) of living animals and plants clearly indicates their common ancestry, and the succession of forms through the fossil record, as well as the genetic record contained in every living organism, provides powerful evidence of the reality of evolution.

It is a statement of the bleeding obvious and any cretin creationists with a brain cell should drop their crazy bullshit dogma and repent in the face of overwhelming evidence (we've got the fossils - you fail).  Of course they won't and the batshit crazy cretin creationists won't let this slide for a moment.

This Should Get The Fundies Spitting Blood

I live about 30 miles from Philadelphia. It's a beautiful city and I consider myself fortunate to have ended up here.

Pennsylvania of course has the dubious honor of being the state that tested Evolution vs. (un)Intelligent Design where thankfully reason did make sense and the ID-iots were roundly beaten and heartily laughed at.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the father of modern Evolution, Charles Darwin, the city of Philadelphia has launched The Year of Evolution

So much depends upon evolution.  For well over a century, scientists have been gathering evidence that expands our understanding of biological evolution.  A cornerstone of modern science, evolutionary biology has led us to an ever-greater understanding of the world, our place in it, and the potential of the future.  Scholars in other disciplines have added vital new perspectives to our ongoing understanding of evolution’s importance.

As we approach the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, the originator of the modern theory of evolution, it is a rich time to take stock of how much we've learned since On the Origin of Species was published in 1859.

The University of Pennsylvania and Penn Museum, joined by major Philadelphia cultural organizations, come together to offer the public a year of special programs dedicated to the ever-evolving process of evolution.  Join us!

Crazy Creationists Are At It Again

Our favorite wacky creationists are at it again, and they are busy in our universities poisoning the minds of our students. Kent Hovind (fortunately for us currently behind prison bars) and his nonsense creationist babble is to be shown on video to a student Christian group.

Homeschoolers Who Don't Learn Science Shouldn't Receive a Diploma

From "The American Chronicle" By Steve Shives

There are many, many things I find dubious about the practice of parents homeschooling their children. I wonder how a mother or father who has not been educated as a teacher, who in many cases has not even been to college her/himself, can possibly provide their child with as good an education as students receive in our much-maligned public schools. And I can't help but think that these home school students, of whom there are several million in the United States, are being robbed of a crucial formative experience by not attending school with other people their age and being forced to interact with a diverse group of peers.
